Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
यदि राज्यस्य हेतोस्त्वमिमां वाचं प्रभाषसे।
वक्ष्यामि भरतं दृष्ट्वा राज्यमस्मै प्रदीयताम् ॥ ॥२-९७-१७॥
Yadi rājyasya hetostvamimāṃ vācaṃ prabhāṣase। Vakṣyāmi Bharataṃ dṛṣṭvā rājyamasmai pradīyatām ॥ ॥2-97-17॥
Translation
If you are speaking these words for the sake of the kingdom, then upon seeing Bharata, I will tell him, "Let the kingdom be given to him (Lakshmana)."
हिंदी अनुवाद
यदि तुम राज्य के लोभ (या चाह) के कारण ऐसी बातें कह रहे हो, तो मैं भरत को देखते ही कहूँगा कि 'इन्हें (लक्ष्मण को) राज्य दे दिया जाए'।
English Commentary
This verse acts as the ultimate silencer for Lakshmana. Rama hypothetically attributes Lakshmana’s aggression to a desire for the throne himself. He offers to ask Bharata to handover the kingdom to Lakshmana. This suggestion—that Lakshmana might want the kingdom—would mortify Lakshmana, whose sole motivation is service to Rama. It effectively shatters Lakshmana's aggressive stance, forcing him into silence and introspection.

यह लक्ष्मण को शांत करने का राम का अंतिम और सबसे अचूक अस्त्र है। राम कहते हैं कि यदि लक्ष्मण का क्रोध इसलिए है क्योंकि वे स्वयं राज्य चाहते हैं, तो राम भरत से कहकर वह राज्य लक्ष्मण को दिलवा देंगे। यह सुनकर लक्ष्मण का लज्जित होना स्वाभाविक है, क्योंकि उनका क्रोध केवल राम के अधिकार के लिए था, अपने लिए नहीं। राम ने बड़ी चतुराई से लक्ष्मण को यह अहसास दिला दिया कि उनका क्रोध व्यर्थ है और राम त्याग की किस ऊँचाई पर हैं।
