उच्यमानोऽपि भरतो मया लक्ष्मण तत्त्वत:।
राज्यमस्मै प्रयच्छेति बाढमित्येव वक्ष्यति ॥२-९७-१८॥
ucyamāno'pi bharato mayā lakṣmaṇa tattvataḥ |
rājyamasmai prayaccheti bāḍhamityeva vakṣyati ॥2-97-18॥
Translation
O Lakshmana! Even if I were to tell Bharata in all seriousness, "Give the kingdom to him (Lakshmana)," he would simply reply, "Very well."
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे लक्ष्मण! यदि मैं भरत से यथार्थ रूप में यह कहूँ कि "राज्य इसे (लक्ष्मण को) दे दो," तो वे "बहुत अच्छा" (बाढम्) ऐसा ही कहेंगे।
English Commentary
Here, Sri Rama expresses his unwavering faith in Bharata's renunciation and brotherly love. When Lakshmana, upon seeing Bharata's approaching army, suspected hostile intentions, Rama calmed him with this statement. Rama asserts that Bharata is devoid of greed for the kingdom. He is confident that if he were to order Bharata to hand over the kingdom to Lakshmana, Bharata would agree instantly without hesitation. This verse highlights the magnificence of Bharata's character and the selfless bond shared by the brothers of the Raghu lineage, effectively countering Lakshmana's martial agitation with moral certainty.

यहाँ श्रीराम अपने भ्राता भरत के त्याग और भ्रातृ-प्रेम पर अटूट विश्वास प्रकट कर रहे हैं। लक्ष्मण ने जब भरत की सेना को देखकर यह संदेह किया कि भरत उन पर आक्रमण करने आ रहे हैं, तो श्रीराम ने उन्हें शांत करते हुए यह बात कही। श्रीराम का कथन यह स्पष्ट करता है कि भरत राज्य के लोभी नहीं हैं। श्रीराम को विश्वास है कि भरत न केवल श्रीराम की आज्ञा का पालन करेंगे, बल्कि यदि श्रीराम आदेश दें तो भरत अपना राज्य लक्ष्मण को सौंपने में भी क्षण भर का विलंब नहीं करेंगे। यह श्लोक भरत के चरित्र की महानता और रघुकुल के भाइयों के बीच के निस्वार्थ प्रेम का परिचायक है।
