तद्वाक्यं लक्ष्मण: श्रुत्वा व्रीडित: प्रत्युवाच ह।
त्वां मन्ये द्रष्टुमायात: पिता दशरथ: स्वयम् ॥२-९७-२०॥
tadvākyaṃ lakṣmaṇaḥ śrutvā vrīḍitaḥ pratyuvāca ha |
tvāṃ manye draṣṭumāyātaḥ pitā daśarathaḥ svayam ॥2-97-20॥
Translation
Hearing those words, the embarrassed Lakshmana replied, "I think Father Dasharatha himself has come to see you."
हिंदी अनुवाद
श्रीराम के उन वचनों को सुनकर लज्जित हुए लक्ष्मण ने उत्तर दिया—"मैं समझता हूँ कि पिताजी दशरथ स्वयं ही आपको देखने (मिलने) आये हैं।"
English Commentary
In an attempt to mask his embarrassment and shift the conversation from his previous aggressive stance, Lakshmana looks at the army again and offers a new interpretation. He suggests that perhaps King Dasharatha himself has come to visit Rama. This statement serves a dual purpose: it diffuses the tension caused by his earlier blunder regarding Bharata, and it reveals the subconscious hope of the exiled sons that their father might have come to rescue them. It marks a transition from hostility to hopeful speculation.

अपनी लज्जा को छिपाने और विषय को बदलने के प्रयास में, लक्ष्मण सेना की ओर पुनः दृष्टि डालते हैं और एक नई संभावना व्यक्त करते हैं। वे कहते हैं कि संभवतः यह सेना शत्रुता के लिए नहीं, बल्कि महाराज दशरथ स्वयं श्रीराम को मनाने और वापस ले जाने के लिए आए हैं। यह कथन लक्ष्मण की मानसिक स्थिति को सामान्य करने का प्रयास है। साथ ही, यह वन में निर्वासित पुत्रों की अपने पिता के प्रति सुप्त आशा को भी दर्शाता है कि शायद पिता का स्नेह उन्हें वापस बुलाने ले आया हो।
