Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
धर्ममर्थं च कामं च पृथिवीं चापि लक्ष्मण।
इच्छामि भवतामर्थे एतत् प्रतिश्रुणोमि ते ॥ ॥२-९७-५॥
Dharmamarthaṃ ca kāmaṃ ca pṛthivīṃ cāpi Lakṣmaṇa। Icchāmi bhavatāmarthe etat pratiśṛṇomi te ॥ ॥2-97-5॥
Translation
I desire Dharma, Artha, Kama, and even the earth only for the sake of you (my brothers); I promise this to you, O Lakshmana.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे लक्ष्मण! मैं धर्म, अर्थ, काम और पृथ्वी (का राज्य) भी केवल तुम सब (भाइयों) के लिए ही चाहता हूँ; मैं तुमसे यह प्रतिज्ञा करता हूँ।
English Commentary
This is a definitive statement of Rama’s philosophy. He declares that his pursuit of the Purusharthas (Dharma, Artha, Kama) and political power (the earth) is solely for the benefit of his brothers, not for personal gratification. By saying 'I promise this to you' (pratiśṛṇomi te), Rama reassures Lakshmana that he has no selfish attachment to the throne. It reframes the concept of kingship from a position of power to a resource for sustaining family and duty. If the kingdom does not serve his brothers, Rama has no need for it.

यह राम के चरित्र का एक निर्णायक श्लोक है। वे लक्ष्मण को आश्वस्त करते हैं कि उनके जीवन में 'पुरुषार्थ' (धर्म, अर्थ, काम) का प्रयोजन स्वयं का भोग नहीं, बल्कि अपने भाइयों (भवतामर्थे) का सुख है। राम यहाँ एक आदर्श बड़े भाई के रूप में उभरते हैं जो राज्य और संपदा को केवल इसलिए स्वीकार करना चाहते हैं ताकि वे अपने परिवार का पालन कर सकें। 'प्रतिश्रुणोमि' (मैं प्रतिज्ञा करता हूँ) कहकर वे लक्ष्मण के मन से यह संदेह पूरी तरह मिटा देना चाहते हैं कि भरत राज्य छीनने आए हैं, क्योंकि राम की दृष्टि में राज्य का भोग भाई मिल-बांट कर ही करते हैं।
