भ्रातॄणां सङ्ग्रहार्थं च सुखार्थं चापि लक्ष्मण।
राज्यमप्यहमिच्छामि सत्येनायुधमालभे ॥ ॥२-९७-६॥
Bhrātṝṇāṃ saṅgrahārthaṃ ca sukhārthaṃ cāpi Lakṣmaṇa। Rājyamapyahamicchāmi satyenāyudhamālabhe ॥ ॥2-97-6॥
Translation
O Lakshmana, I desire the kingdom only for the protection and happiness of my brothers. Touching my weapon, I swear this in truth.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे लक्ष्मण! मैं अपने भाइयों के पालन-पोषण और सुख के लिए ही राज्य की इच्छा करता हूँ। मैं अपने शस्त्रों का स्पर्श कर यह सत्य (शपथ) कहता हूँ।
English Commentary
Rama invokes a solemn warrior oath by touching his weapon (āyudhamālabhe), signifying the absolute truth of his statement. He clarifies that his desire for the kingdom is instrumental, not terminal; it is merely a means to ensure the welfare (saṅgraha) and happiness (sukha) of his brothers. This defines Rama’s philosophy of kingship: power is a tool for service, specifically for keeping the family united and prosperous. He explicitly rejects power for personal gratification.

राम यहाँ अपने 'क्षत्रिय धर्म' की शपथ लेते हैं। एक योद्धा के लिए उसके आयुध (शस्त्र) सबसे पवित्र होते हैं, और उन्हें छूकर ली गई शपथ कभी झूठी नहीं हो सकती। राम स्पष्ट करते हैं कि उनके लिए सत्ता का उद्देश्य 'स्व-सुख' नहीं, बल्कि 'भ्रातृ-संग्रह' (भाइयों को साथ रखना और उनका पालन करना) है। यह श्लोक राम के नेतृत्व दर्शन को परिभाषित करता है—नेतृत्व सेवा के लिए है, भोग के लिए नहीं। वे लक्ष्मण को आश्वस्त कर रहे हैं कि यदि राज्य मिलने से भाइयों में विग्रह होता है, तो उन्हें वह राज्य नहीं चाहिए।
