Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
नेयं मम मही सौम्य दुर्ल्लभा सागराम्बरा।
नहीच्छेयमधर्मेण शक्रत्वमपि लक्ष्मण ॥ ॥२-९७-७॥
Neyaṃ mama mahī saumya durllabhā sāgarāmbarā। Nahīccheyamadharmeṇa Śakratvamapi Lakṣmaṇa ॥ ॥2-97-7॥
Translation
O gentle one, this earth draped by the oceans is not difficult for me to obtain; but I do not desire even the status of Indra (Lord of Gods) through unrighteousness (Adharma).
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे सौम्य (लक्ष्मण)! समुद्र रूपी वस्त्र वाली यह पृथ्वी प्राप्त करना मेरे लिए दुर्लभ (कठिन) नहीं है, किन्तु मैं अधर्म के द्वारा इंद्र का पद भी नहीं चाहता।
English Commentary
Rama addresses Lakshmana as Saumya (gentle one), trying to cool his temper. He asserts his martial confidence, stating that conquering the earth is not difficult (durlabhā) for him. However, he establishes his moral baseline: he would reject even the highest power in the cosmos (the position of Śakra or Indra) if it required compromising Dharma. This verse encapsulates the core theme of the Ramayana—Dharma is superior to power. Victory obtained through unrighteousness is, to Rama, a defeat.

राम लक्ष्मण को 'सौम्य' (कोमल स्वभाव वाला) संबोधित करते हैं, ताकि उनका क्रोध शांत हो सके। राम अपने पराक्रम को जानते हैं—वे पूरी पृथ्वी (सागराम्बरा) जीत सकते हैं—परंतु वे 'साधन की पवित्रता' पर जोर देते हैं। यदि फल 'इन्द्र का पद' भी हो, लेकिन रास्ता 'अधर्म' का हो, तो राम उसे त्याग देंगे। यह श्लोक भारतीय नैतिकता का आधार स्तम्भ है: "धर्म के बिना शक्ति विष के समान है।" राम लक्ष्मण को समझा रहे हैं कि भरत को मारकर राज्य लेना अधर्म है, इसलिए वह उन्हें स्वीकार्य नहीं है।
