iti lokasamākruṣṭaḥ pādeṣvadya prasādayan | rāmasya nipatiṣyāmi sītāyā lakṣmaṇasya ca ॥२-९९-१७॥

Translation
Thus censured by the world, I shall today fall at the feet of Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana to propitiate them.

लोकनेंदा से अपमानित होकर, उन्हें प्रसन्न करने के लिए आज मैं श्री राम, सीता और लक्ष्मण के चरणों में गिर पड़ूँगा।
English Commentary
Bharata acts here as the embodiment of repentance and humility. The phrase 'lokasamākruṣṭaḥ' (censured by the world) reveals the psychological burden Bharata carries; he feels vicariously guilty for his mother's actions and believes the world views him as a usurper. His resolution to fall at the feet of not just Rama, but also Sita and Lakshmana, signifies his desperate need for expiation and acceptance. In the Vaishnava tradition, this is akin to 'Sharanagati' (total surrender). He seeks to 'propitiate' (prasādayan) them, hoping that his physical prostration will convey the purity of his heart which words might fail to express.

भरत के मन में ग्लानि और दुःख का सागर उमड़ रहा है। 'लोकसमाक्रुष्ट:' शब्द अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है; भरत को लगता है कि कैकेयी के कृत्य के कारण समस्त संसार उन्हें दोषी मान रहा है। यद्यपि वे निर्दोष हैं, तथापि उनका ह्रदय भारी है। उन्हें लगता है कि रघुनंदन राम के चरणों में आत्मसमर्पण ही एकमात्र उपाय है जिससे यह कलंक मिट सके और राम प्रसन्न हो सकें। यहाँ भरत की विनम्रता की पराकाष्ठा है कि वे केवल राम ही नहीं, अपितु सीता और लक्ष्मण के चरणों में भी गिरने का संकल्प लेते हैं, जो उनकी भ्रातृ-भक्ति और अपने से बड़ों (तथा लक्ष्मण जो वनवास में ज्येष्ठ की सेवा कर रहे हैं) के प्रति सम्मान को दर्शाता है।
