taṃ tu kṛṣṇājinadharaṃ cīravalkalavāsasam | dadarśa rāmamāsīnamabhitaḥ pāvakopamam ॥२-९९-२६॥

Translation
He saw Rama wearing black deerskin and bark garments, seated like the fire (itself), radiating splendor all around.

उन्होंने राम को देखा जो कृष्ण मृगचर्म और वल्कल (पेड़ की छाल) के वस्त्र पहने हुए थे और अग्नि के समान चारों ओर तेजस्वी लग रहे थे।
English Commentary
The description focuses on Rama’s attire, emphasizing the rigors of ascetic life. He wears the skin of a black antelope and bark of trees ('ciravalkala'), the standard dress code for Vanaprastha. However, the simile 'pavakopamam' (like fire) suggests that these humble garments cannot hide his inherent brilliance. Just as fire retains its heat and light regardless of the fuel, Rama retains his regal and spiritual splendor despite his attire. This paradox of a ragged exterior housing a blazing interior spirit is a central theme of Rama's forest phase.

भरत राम के वेश का सूक्ष्म निरीक्षण करते हैं। राम ने राजसी वस्त्र त्याग कर 'कृष्ण-मृगचर्म' और 'वल्कल' धारण कर रखे हैं। बाहरी वेश दरिद्र जैसा हो सकता है, किन्तु उनका आत्मिक तेज 'पावकोपमम्' (अग्नि के समान) है। वनवास और तपस्या ने उनके तेज को कम नहीं किया, बल्कि और बढ़ा दिया है। भरत को यह देखकर अत्यधिक पीड़ा होती है कि जो शरीर कोमल रेशमी वस्त्रों का अभ्यस्त था, वह आज खुरदरी छाल पहने है। फिर भी, राम का व्यक्तित्व उस वेश में भी देदीप्यमान है, जैसे राख से ढकी हुई अग्नि।
