Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तान् पार्थिवान् वारणयूथपाभान् समागतांस्तत्र महत्यरण्ये।
वनौकसस्तेऽपि समीक्ष्य सर्वेप्यश्रूण्यमुञ्चन् प्रविहाय हर्षम् ॥ ॥२-९९-४२॥
Tān pārthivān vāraṇayūthapābhān samāgatāṃstatra mahatyaraṇye। Vanaukasaste’pi samīkṣya sarvepyaśrūṇyamuñcan pravihāya harṣam ॥ ॥2-99-42॥
Translation
Seeing those princes, possessing the splendor of leaders of elephant herds, reunited in that great forest, even the forest-dwellers shed tears, abandoning their joy.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस विशाल वन में गजराजों के समान आभा वाले उन राजकुमारों को एक साथ मिले हुए देखकर, वहाँ रहने वाले वनवासी भी अपना हर्ष त्यागकर आँसू बहाने लगे।
English Commentary
This verse captures the poignant emotional shift of the observers. The forest dwellers, initially excited to witness the reunion, are overcome with sorrow upon seeing the reality of the situation. The princes are described as Varanayuthapabhan (splendid like leaders of elephant herds), emphasizing their inherent majesty which contrasts sharply with their pitiable forest condition. The act of "abandoning joy" indicates that the tragedy of the Ikshvaku lineage—brothers forced into exile and separation—was so palpable that it moved impartial observers to tears. It highlights the collective empathy of the common people (represented by the forest dwellers) for the tribulations of their beloved princes.

यह श्लोक वनवासियों की संवेदनशीलता और सहानुभूति को उजागर करता है। यद्यपि राम से मिलने की उत्सुकता में पहले हर्ष का वातावरण था, किन्तु जब उन्होंने रघुकुल के इन तेजस्वी राजकुमारों को—जो महलों में रहने योग्य थे—वन की धूल और वल्कल वस्त्रों में एक-दूसरे से गले मिलते देखा, तो करुणा प्रबल हो गई। 'वारणयूथपाभान्' (गजों के यूथपतियों के समान) विशेषण राजकुमारों के बल और गरिमा को दर्शाता है। वनवासियों का रोना यह सिद्ध करता है कि राम और भरत का दुख इतना गहरा था कि उसने प्रकृति और परिवेश को भी शोकमग्न कर दिया। यह दृश्य मानवीय भावनाओं की पराकाष्ठा है जहाँ दर्शक भी भोक्ता के दुख में विलीन हो जाता है।
