Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
शालायास्त्वग्रतस्तस्या ददर्श भरतस्तदा।
काष्ठानि चावभग्नानि पुष्पाण्युपचितानि च ॥ ॥२-९९-५॥
Śālāyāstvagratastasyā dadarśa Bharatastadā. Kāṣṭhāni cāvabhagnāni puṣpāṇyupacitāni ca. ॥2-99-5॥
Translation
Then, right in front of that leaf-hut, Bharata saw pieces of wood broken (for fuel) and flowers that had been gathered.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब भरत ने उस पर्णशाला के ठीक सामने तोड़े हुए (ईंधन योग्य) काष्ठ और संचित किए हुए पुष्प देखे।
English Commentary
In this verse, Bharata observes the immediate surroundings of Rama’s hermitage. The presence of 'avabhagnāni kāṣṭhāni' (broken wood) indicates the practical aspects of ascetic life—gathering fuel for the sacred fire (Agnihotra) and for warmth. Simultaneously, the 'upacitāni puṣpāṇi' (gathered flowers) suggest that despite the hardships of the forest, the daily rituals of worship and an appreciation for beauty are being meticulously maintained by Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana. For Bharata, these are not merely objects but poignant evidences of his brother's daily reality. It highlights the discipline of the exiles. The juxtaposition of rough wood and delicate flowers mirrors the life they are leading—harsh in physical reality yet fragrant with Dharma and devotion.

इस श्लोक में भरत जी द्वारा श्रीराम के आश्रम के निकट पहुँचने का वर्णन है। यहाँ 'शाला' शब्द पर्णकुटी का द्योतक है। भरत जी की दृष्टि सूक्ष्म है; वे आश्रम के बाहरी संकेतों से ही श्रीराम और सीता जी की दिनचर्या का अनुमान लगा रहे हैं। टूटी हुई लकड़ियाँ (काष्ठ) यह सूचित करती हैं कि यहाँ अग्निहोत्र और शीत निवारण के लिए नियमित रूप से ईंधन एकत्र किया जाता है। वहीं, 'पुष्पाण्युपचितानि' (एकत्रित पुष्प) यह दर्शाते हैं कि वन में भी श्रीराम देव-पूजन और सौंदर्य बोध से विमुख नहीं हैं। यह दृश्य भरत के मन में मिश्रित भाव उत्पन्न करता है—एक ओर अपने आराध्य के निकट होने का हर्ष, और दूसरी ओर राजभवन के सुखों को छोड़कर इस कठोर जीवन को स्वीकार करने वाले भाई की स्थिति देखकर उत्पन्न विषाद। यह श्लोक आश्रम जीवन की सात्विकता और स्वावलंबन को रेखांकित करता है।
