Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
विष्णुना सदृशो वीर्ये सोमवत् प्रिय दर्शनः ।
काल अग्नि सदृशः क्रोधे क्षमया पृथ्वी समः ॥१-१-१८॥
Viṣṇunā sadṛśo vīrye somavat priya darśanaḥ |
Kāla agni sadṛśaḥ krodhe kṣamayā pṛthvī samaḥ ॥1-1-18॥
Translation
He (Shri Rama) is equal to Lord Vishnu in valor, pleasing to the sight like the Moon. He is like the fire of destruction (Kāla Agni) in anger, and equal to the Earth in forgiveness (patience).

वे (श्रीराम) पराक्रम में भगवान विष्णु के समान हैं, दर्शन में चन्द्रमा के समान प्रिय हैं। क्रोध में प्रलय की अग्नि (काल अग्नि) के समान हैं, और क्षमाशीलता में पृथ्वी के समान हैं।
English Commentary
This verse is continued by Sage Nārada to Sage Vālmīki, describing Shri Rāma's divine might, gentleness, and balanced personality. It effectively portrays the contrasting yet harmonious facets of Shri Rāma's character.
The verse starts with 'Viṣṇunā sadṛśo vīrye,' which directly equates His strength and valor to that of Lord Vishnu. This signifies that Shri Rāma possesses the divine capacity to sustain the universe and annihilate evil, firmly establishing His transcendence and might.
In contrast, 'somavat priya darśanaḥ' states that His appearance is exceedingly gentle, cooling, and pleasing to the mind, just like the sight of the Moon. This indicates that His valor is purely for the protection of Dharma, not for spreading fear.
The second part of the verse highlights two more crucial, opposing qualities. 'Kāla agni sadṛśaḥ krodhe' suggests that when it comes to protecting righteousness or addressing the suffering of the virtuous, His anger is as terrible and destructive as the fire of cosmic dissolution (Kāla Agni). Simultaneously, 'kṣamayā pṛthvī samaḥ' conveys that His nature is as patient and forgiving as the Earth. Just as the Earth tolerates everything, Shri Rāma possesses immense capacity to endure insults and offenses, unless that boundary threatens Dharma. This balance proves Him to be an ideal ruler and a righteous soul.

यह श्लोक भी महर्षि नारद द्वारा महर्षि वाल्मीकि को श्रीराम की दैवी शक्ति, सौम्यता और उनके संतुलित व्यक्तित्व का वर्णन करते हुए कहा गया है। यह श्लोक श्रीराम के व्यक्तित्व के विभिन्न और विपरीत पहलुओं को प्रभावी ढंग से दर्शाता है।
