Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
यौव राज्येन संयोक्तुम् ऐच्छत् प्रीत्या महीपतिः ।
तस्य अभिषेक संभारान् दृष्ट्वा भार्या अथ कैकयी ॥१-१-२१॥
yauva rājyena saṃyoktum aicchat prītyā mahīpatiḥ |
tasya abhiṣeka saṃbhārān dṛṣṭvā bhāryā atha kaikeyī ॥1-1-21॥
Translation
The king (Dasharatha) desired, out of affection, to invest (Rama) with the office of Crown Prince. Seeing the preparations for his (Rama's) anointing, his wife, Kaikeyi, then (did what follows).

राजा (दशरथ) ने प्रेमपूर्वक (राम को) युवराज पद पर अभिषिक्त करना चाहा। उस (राम) के अभिषेक की सामग्री को देखकर, फिर उनकी भार्या कैकेयी ने (आगे की घटना हुई)।
English Commentary
This verse is part of the Valmiki Ramayana, Balakanda, Sarga 1, Shloka 21, and marks one of the pivotal points in the great Ramayana narrative. The context here is the moment when Maharaja Dasharatha, out of deep love and affection ('prītyā'), desires to anoint his beloved eldest son, Shri Rama, as the Crown Prince (Yuvaraja). 'Mahīpatiḥ' (the lord of the earth), Maharaja Dasharatha, makes this decision affectionately. The second half of the verse introduces a crucial turn: it states that the king's wife, Kaikeyi, upon seeing the vast preparations ('saṃbhārān') for the anointing ceremony for the Crown Prince, (as the subsequent verses reveal) was provoked to act. This shloka depicts the peaceful preparations for an auspicious event, which is immediately followed by a great upheaval in the narrative—setting the initial stage for Shri Rama's subsequent exile and the unfolding of the Ramacharita.
