तम् व्रजंतम् प्रियो भ्राता लक्ष्मणः अनुजगाम ह ।
स्नेहात् विनय संपन्नः सुमित्र आनंद वर्धनः ॥१-१-२५॥
tam vrajaṃtam priyo bhrātā lakṣmaṇaḥ anujagāma ha |
snehāt vinaya saṃpannaḥ sumitra ānanda vardhanaḥ ॥1-1-25॥
Translation
His dear brother, Lakshmana, who was endowed with humility and affection, and who increased the joy of Sumitra, indeed followed him (Rama) who was going (to the forest).

वन को जाते हुए उन (राम) के पीछे उनके प्रिय भाई, स्नेह से परिपूर्ण और विनयशील लक्ष्मण भी चले गए, जो सुमित्रा की खुशी बढ़ाने वाले थे।
English Commentary
This verse (Balakanda, Sarga 1, Shloka 25) introduces another great character of the Ramayana and highlights his profound fraternal love and selfless service: Lakshmana. When Shri Rama was proceeding to the forest to fulfill his father's vow, his 'priyaḥ bhrātā' (dear brother) Lakshmana 'anujagāma ha' (indeed followed) 'tam vrajaṃtam' (him who was going). The primary motive behind Lakshmana's action was 'snehāt' (deep affection). He is described as 'vinaya saṃpannaḥ' (endowed with humility) and 'sumitra ānanda vardhanaḥ' (one who increases the joy of his mother, Sumitra). This description shows that Lakshmana did not merely follow an order but chose willingly, out of unwavering love and respect for his elder brother, to endure the hardships of the forest alongside him. This shloka establishes the supreme ideal of 'Bhratri-Dharma' (the duty of a brother).
