एतत् इच्छामि अहम् श्रोतुम् परम् कौतूहलम् हि मे ।
महर्षे त्वम् समर्थोऽसि ज्ञातुम् एवम् विधम् नरम् ॥१-१-५॥
etat ichchhāmi aham śrotum param kautūhalam hi me |
maharṣe tvam samartho'si jñātum evam vidham naram ॥1-1-5॥
Translation
I wish to hear all this, for my curiosity is extreme (param kautūhalam). O Great Sage! You are capable of knowing a person of this kind (possessing these virtues).

मैं यह सब सुनना चाहता हूँ, क्योंकि मेरा अत्यधिक कौतूहल है। महर्षे (हे महान ऋषि)! आप ऐसे व्यक्ति (इन गुणों वाले) को जानने में समर्थ हैं।
English Commentary
This verse concludes the detailed inquiry made by Maharishi Valmiki to Devarshi Narada and serves as the gateway to the epic narrative. It summarizes the long list of ideal human virtues (such as valorous, righteous, grateful, truthful, self-controlled, compassionate, and supremely powerful) presented by Valmiki in the previous three verses (1-1-2 to 1-1-4). Valmiki expresses his wish to 'hear all this,' stating that his curiosity (kautūhalam) is extreme (param). Following this, he affirms Narada's competence, addressing him as Maharshi (Great Sage) and declaring that he is the only capable person (samarthaḥ) who can know an excellent man ('of this kind' - evam vidham). This statement shows both Valmiki's humility and his unwavering faith in Narada's omniscience. This verse makes it clear that Valmiki's goal is not merely to hear a story, but to gain knowledge of an ideal hero whose life could set a standard for humanity.
