Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
रामाय आवेदितम् सर्वम् प्रणयात् दुःखितेन च ।
प्रतिज्ञातम् च रामेण तदा वालि वधम् प्रति ॥१-१-६२॥
rāmāya āveditam sarvam praṇayāt duḥkhitena ca । pratijñātam ca rāmeṇa tadā vāli vadham prati ॥1-1-62॥
Translation
The distressed (Sugrīva), out of affection (due to friendship), related everything to Śrī Rāma. And then, Śrī Rāma immediately made a solemn vow concerning the killing of Vāli.

दुःखित सुग्रीव ने प्रेमपूर्वक (मित्रता के कारण) यह सब कुछ श्री राम को निवेदन किया। तब श्री राम ने उसी क्षण वाली के वध के लिए प्रतिज्ञा (संकल्प) की।
English Commentary
This verse directly follows the establishment of the sacred friendship between the Vānara King Sugrīva and Śrī Rāma. Here, it is described that the distressed (duḥkhitena) Sugrīva, burdened by the tyranny and oppression of his brother Vāli, related (āveditam) his entire plight to Śrī Rāma, driven by the affection (praṇayāt) and trust of their newly formed alliance. This intimate disclosure underscores that Sugrīva viewed Śrī Rāma not just as an ally, but as a true friend and reliable recourse. Hearing this suffering and plea, the righteous Śrī Rāma immediately (tadā) made a significant solemn vow (pratijñātam). This vow concerned the killing of Vāli, the mighty king of Kiṣkindhā and Sugrīva's antagonist. Śrī Rāma's swift commitment demonstrates His adherence to the principles of Dharma, the upholding of friendship, and the removal of injustice. This instant pledge was crucial in ensuring the alleviation of Sugrīva's distress and his restoration as the Vānara King, an essential prerequisite for the subsequent search for Mother Sītā.
