Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
कः त्वम् किम् वर्तसे ब्रह्मन् ज्ञातुम् इच्छामहे वयम् ।
एकः त्वम् विजने दूरे वने चरसि शंस नः ॥१-१०-१२॥
kaḥ tvam kim vartase brahman jñātum icchāmahe vayam |
ekaḥ tvam vijane dūre vane carasi śaṁsa naḥ ॥1-10-12॥
Translation
Who are you, O Brahman (one possessing spiritual knowledge/a Vedic scholar)? What do you do (or, what is your way of life)? We wish to know. You are alone, wandering in this solitary and distant forest; tell us.

English Commentary

This shloka immediately follows the previous verse (1-10-11) in the Bala Kanda, Sarga 10, of the Valmiki Ramayana. It captures the very first words spoken by the beautifully dressed women (the maidens/courtesans) who were sent by King Romapada to lure the sage's son, Rishyasringa Ji, out of his hermitage. Having approached him in the previous verse, they now initiate a conversation.
The verse shows the women addressing Rishyasringa Ji with apparent politeness and curiosity. They respectfully call him 'Brahman' (O learned one/Vedic scholar), acknowledging his ascetic status. They ask him directly about his identity ('Who are you?') and his way of life ('What do you do?'), stating their wish to know. They express a mild puzzlement about his presence, alone, in a distant and solitary forest. This serves as a skillful opening to engage the sage's son, the first step in their mission to draw the young, innocent ascetic into a dialogue, and eventually, to the city, consistent with the King's plan to end the drought.

यह श्लोक वाल्मीकि रामायण के बालकाण्ड के दसवें सर्ग का पिछला श्लोक (१-१०-११) जहाँ समाप्त होता है, उसी बात को आगे बढ़ाता है। श्लोक १-१०-११ में वर्णित चित्र वेषभूषा वाली स्त्रियाँ (गणिकाएँ), जो ऋषिपुत्र ऋष्यशृंग जी को नगर में लाने के लिए भेजी गई थीं, अब उनसे संवाद स्थापित कर रही हैं।
