पुत्रार्थम् हयमेधेन यक्षयामि इति मतिर्मम ।
तदहम् यष्टुम् इच्छामि हयमेधेन कर्मणा ॥१-१२-९॥
putrārtham hayamedhena yakṣyāmi iti matirmama |
tadaham yaṣṭum icchāmi hayamedhena karmaṇā ॥1-12-9॥
Translation
My intention is to perform the Ashwamedha sacrifice for the sake of a son. Therefore, I wish to perform the sacrifice through the ritual of the Ashwamedha.

पुत्र की प्राप्ति के लिए मैं अश्वमेध यज्ञ करूँगा, ऐसा मेरा विचार है। इसलिए मैं अश्वमेध कर्म के द्वारा यज्ञ करना चाहता हूँ।
English Commentary
Following his earnest confession of distress over childlessness, King Dasharatha now formally presents his proposed solution to the assembled sages and Vedic scholars. This verse is crucial as it details the King's definitive resolution. He explicitly states, putrārtham hayamedhena yakṣyāmi iti matirmama—'My intention (or firm resolution) is to perform the Ashwamedha sacrifice for the sake of a son.' The Ashwamedha, traditionally a sacrifice performed by a universal sovereign, is here repurposed for the deeply personal and righteous goal of progeny, aligning the King's action with Dharma. The second line, tadaham yaṣṭum icchāmi hayamedhena karmaṇā, emphasizes his immediate desire to perform the sacrifice using the prescribed ritualistic action. The King is not merely floating an idea but declaring a commitment and requesting the practical execution of this grand rite.
