Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
दान्तव्यम् अन्नम् विधिवत् सत्कृत्य न तु लीलया ।
सर्वे वर्णा यथा पूजाम् प्राप्नुवन्ति सुसत्कृताः ॥१-१३-१४॥
dātavyam annam vidhivat satkṛtya na tu līlayā |
sarve varṇā yathā pūjām prāpnuvanti susatkṛtāḥ ॥1-13-14॥
Translation
"Food should be given in accordance with the rules and with respect, not with indifference or casually. Ensure that people of all Varnas receive hospitality and feel well-honored."

"भोजन विधिवत और सत्कारपूर्वक दिया जाना चाहिए, न कि लीला (लापरवाही या तिरस्कार) से। इस प्रकार व्यवस्था हो कि सभी वर्णों के लोग भली-भांति सत्कार पाकर सम्मानित अनुभव करें।"
English Commentary
This verse encapsulates the Dharmic ethos of Annadana (gift of food). It is not enough to feed; the attitude constitutes the merit. Vasishtha explicitly warns against leelaya—giving casually, carelessly, or with condescension. The food must be served vidhivat (per respectful tradition). Notably, the instruction sarve varnah (all classes/castes) underlines a democratic approach to hospitality within the Yajna context; everyone, regardless of social standing, must feel susatkritah (well-honored) and respected.

यह श्लोक भारतीय संस्कृति में 'अन्नदान' के दर्शन को स्पष्ट करता है। दान देना ही पर्याप्त नहीं है, देने का 'भाव' महत्वपूर्ण है। 'न तु लीलया' (मजाक या बेपरवाही से नहीं) कहकर वसिष्ठ जी चेतावनी देते हैं कि अन्न का अपमान न हो। 'सर्वे वर्णा' (सभी वर्ण) का उल्लेख यह सुनिश्चित करता है कि यह यज्ञ समावेशी है और भोजन वितरण में जातिगत भेदभाव के कारण किसी का अपमान नहीं होना चाहिए। सम्मान (पूजा) सभी का अधिकार है।
