Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स्वयम् एव हि धर्मात्मा प्रयातो मुनि शासनात् ।
सुमंत्रः त्वरितो भूत्वा समानेतुम् महामतिः ॥ ॥१-१३-३१॥
Svayam eva hi dharmātmā prayāto muni śāsanāt । Sumantraḥ tvarito bhūtvā samānetum mahāmatiḥ ॥ ॥1-13-31॥
Translation
Following the sage's command, the righteous and highly intelligent Sumantra himself proceeded with haste to personally escort the distinguished monarchs.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मुनि (वसिष्ठ) की आज्ञा पाकर, धर्मात्मा और महाबुद्धिमान सुमंत्र स्वयं भी शीघ्रता से उन विशिष्ट राजाओं को आदर सहित लाने के लिए गए।
English Commentary
Even though Sumantra had already delegated tasks to his staff, he personally went to receive certain key guests. This demonstrates his humility and deep understanding of statecraft (mahamatih). He understood that his personal presence would convey deep respect to the visiting allies. It illustrates the Vedic principle that a guest is akin to God (Atithi Devo Bhava), and adherence to the spiritual preceptor's command takes precedence over one's official rank.

यद्यपि सुमंत्र ने सेवकों को आदेश दे दिया था, फिर भी अतिविशिष्ट अतिथियों के लिए वे स्वयं गए। यह उनकी विनम्रता और कर्तव्यनिष्ठा को दर्शाता है। 'महामतिः' (बुद्धिमान) विशेषण बताता है कि सुमंत्र जानते थे कि किन राजाओं का स्वागत उन्हें स्वयं करना चाहिए ताकि कूटनीतिक संबंध मधुर बने रहें। वसिष्ठ जी की आज्ञा को सर्वोपरि मानकर उन्होंने अपने पद का अहंकार नहीं किया, जो एक आदर्श मंत्री का लक्षण है।
