ततः प्रीतो द्विज श्रेष्ठः तान् सर्वान् मुनिर् अब्रवीत् ।
अवज्ञया न दातव्यम् कस्य चित् लीलया अपि वा ॥ ॥१-१३-३३॥
Tataḥ prīto dvija śreṣṭhaḥ tān sarvān munir abravīt । Avajñayā na dātavyam kasya cit līlayā api vā ॥ ॥1-13-33॥
Translation
The best of the Twice-born, Sage Vasistha, was pleased with them and instructed: "Nothing should be given to anyone with disrespect or with an attitude of casual indifference."

उन सबकी बात सुनकर द्विजश्रेष्ठ मुनि वसिष्ठ बहुत प्रसन्न हुए और उन सबसे बोले— "किसी को भी अपमान (अवज्ञा) से या तिरस्कार (लीला/मजाक) में कुछ भी नहीं दिया जाना चाहिए।"
English Commentary
This verse encapsulates a core ethical teaching of Vedic culture regarding Dana (charity). Vasistha serves a stern reminder that the intent and attitude behind giving are as important as the gift itself. Giving with avajna (disrespect) or lila (frivolity/indifference) negates the merit of the act. He ensures that in the busyness of the massive event, the workers do not lose their sense of humility and respect toward the recipients, preserving the sanctity of the Yajna.

यहाँ सनातन धर्म का एक बहुत ही गहरा सिद्धांत है—दान का भाव। वसिष्ठ जी स्पष्ट निर्देश देते हैं कि केवल वस्तु देना पर्याप्त नहीं है, देने का तरीका भी महत्वपूर्ण है। 'अवज्ञा' (अपमान) और 'लीला' (लापरवाही या उपहास) से दिया गया दान व्यर्थ है। यज्ञ में आने वाला हर व्यक्ति, चाहे वह छोटा हो या बड़ा, सम्मान का अधिकारी है। यह निर्देश सेवकों को इसलिए दिया गया ताकि वे अतिथियों के साथ व्यवहार में अत्यंत सावधान रहें।
