Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अवज्ञया कृतम् हन्यात् दातारम् न अत्र संशयः ।
ततः कैश्चित् अहो रात्रैः उपयाता महीक्षितः ॥ ॥१-१३-३४॥
Avajñayā kṛtam hanyāt dātāram na atra saṃśayaḥ । Tataḥ kaiścit aho rātraiḥ upayātā mahīkṣitaḥ ॥ ॥1-13-34॥
Translation
"For a deed done with disrespect destroys the giver; of this, there is no doubt." Thereafter, within a few days and nights, the invited kings arrived.

(वसिष्ठ जी ने आगे कहा) "इसमें कोई संशय नहीं है कि तिरस्कारपूर्वक किया गया दान दाता का नाश कर देता है।" तदनंतर, कुछ ही दिनों में (आमंत्रित) राजा गण वहां आ पहुँचे।
English Commentary
Vasistha concludes his instruction with a metaphysical warning: disrespectful charity is not just neutral, it is destructive to the giver's spiritual merit (hanyat dataram). This establishes the moral framework for the event. The narrative then transitions smoothly; with the ethical ground rules set and physical preparations complete, the verse notes the arrival of the mahiksitah (protectors of the earth/kings) over the course of a few days.

वसिष्ठ जी अपनी चेतावनी को गंभीरता प्रदान करते हुए कहते हैं कि कुभाव से किया गया दान दाता के पुण्य का नाश कर देता है। यह कर्म के सिद्धांत की पुष्टि है। श्लोक के दूसरे भाग में कथा आगे बढ़ती है—व्यवस्था पूर्ण होते ही देश-देशांतर से राजाओं (महीक्षितः) का आगमन शुरू हो गया। यहाँ आध्यात्मिक उपदेश और कथा के प्रवाह का सुंदर मिश्रण है।
