Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
उपयाता नर व्याघ्र राजानः तव शासनात् ।
मया अपि सत्कृताः सर्वे यथा अर्हम् राज सत्तम ॥ ॥१-१३-३६॥
Upayātā nara vyāghra rājānaḥ tava śāsanāt । Mayā api satkṛtāḥ sarve yathā arham rāja sattama ॥ ॥1-13-36॥
Translation
"O Tiger among men! By your command, the kings have arrived. And O Best of Kings, they have all been received and honored by me according to their merit and status."
हिंदी अनुवाद
(वसिष्ठ बोले) "हे नरव्याघ्र (पुरुषों में श्रेष्ठ)! आपकी आज्ञा से आमंत्रित राजा गण आ गए हैं। हे राजन्! मैंने भी उन सबका यथायोग्य आदर-सत्कार कर दिया है।"
English Commentary
Vasistha addresses Dasharatha with the martial epithet Nara Vyaghra (Tiger among men). He reports that the reception was conducted yatha arham—meaning strictly according to protocol and the relative status of each guest. This was crucial in ancient diplomacy to avoid offense. It shows Vasistha's role was not limited to rituals; he acted as the chief diplomat, ensuring that the King's guests were treated with the precise level of honor due to them.

वसिष्ठ दशरथ को 'नरव्याघ्र' कहकर संबोधित करते हैं, जो शौर्य का प्रतीक है। वसिष्ठ पुष्टि करते हैं कि अतिथि केवल आए ही नहीं हैं, बल्कि उनका 'यथार्हम्' (जिसका जो योग्य स्थान और मान है) सत्कार किया गया है। एक गुरु और मंत्री के रूप में वसिष्ठ ने राजा का भार हल्का कर दिया था। यह श्लोक बताता है कि आतिथ्य में पदानुक्रम (hierarchy) का ध्यान रखना प्राचीन कूटनीति का हिस्सा था।
