Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एक विंशति यूपाः ते एक विंशत् अरत्नयः ।
वासोभिः एक विंशद्भिः एकैकम् समलंकृताः ॥ ॥१-१४-२५॥
Eka viṃśati yūpāḥ te eka viṃśat aratnayaḥ । Vāsobhiḥ eka viṃśadbhiḥ ekaikam samalaṃkṛtāḥ ॥ ॥1-14-25॥
Translation
Those twenty-one posts were each twenty-one Aratnis (cubits) in height. Each of them was beautifully adorned with twenty-one pieces of cloth.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे इक्कीस (21) यूप थे और उनमें से प्रत्येक की ऊँचाई इक्कीस अरत्नि (हाथ) थी। वे इक्कीस यूप अलग-अलग इक्कीस वस्त्रों से भली-भाँति सजाए गए थे।
English Commentary
This verse focuses on the sacred geometry and specific measurements of the sacrificial arena. The number twenty-one is central here: 21 posts, each 21 Aratnis high. An Aratni is a cubit (roughly the distance from the elbow to the tip of the little finger). The recurrence of the number 21 is symbolic in Vedic numerology, often representing the 12 months, 5 seasons, 3 worlds, and the Sun (Aditya), signifying the totality of time and space. The explicit mention that each post was individually draped in cloth (Vasobhih) indicates that these were not treated as mere wood, but as deities or revered guests. The uniformity in height and decoration created a visually striking and spiritually harmonious environment.

यहाँ वाल्मीकि जी ने गणितीय समरूपता (Symmetry) का सुंदर वर्णन किया है। यूपों की कुल संख्या 21 है (6 बिल्व + 6 खैर + 6 पलाश + 1 श्लेष्मातक + 1 देवदारु + 1 अन्य मुख्य यूप)। उनकी ऊंचाई भी '21 अरत्नि' है। 'अरत्नि' एक प्राचीन माप है जो कोहनी से कनिष्ठिका अंगुली के पोर तक की लंबाई (लगभग 18-24 इंच) होती है। 21 की संख्या का वैदिक महत्व है (12 महीने + 5 ऋतुएं + 3 लोक + 1 सूर्य = 21, जैसा कि कुछ ब्राह्मण ग्रंथों में वर्णित है)। प्रत्येक खम्भे को वस्त्रों से सजाना उन्हें सजीव और देवतुल्य बनाता है। यह दोहराव (21 खम्भे, 21 हाथ ऊंचे, 21 वस्त्र) यज्ञ में एक लय और अनुशासन का वातावरण निर्मित करता है।
