धूम गन्धम् वपायाः तु जिघ्रति स्म नराधिपः ।
यथा कालम् यथा न्यायम् निर्णुदन् पापम् आत्मनः ॥ ॥१-१४-३७॥
Dhūma gandham vapāyāḥ tu jighrati sma narādhipaḥ । Yathā kālam yathā nyāyam nirṇudan pāpam ātmanaḥ ॥ ॥1-14-37॥
Translation
The Lord of Men (King Dasharatha) smelled the scent of the smoke rising from the burning marrow at the proper time and in the prescribed manner, thereby purging himself of sin.
हिंदी अनुवाद
राजा (नराधिप) दशरथ ने समय और विधि के अनुसार उस वपा के धूम की गंध को सूंघा और इस प्रकार अपने पापों को नष्ट किया।
English Commentary
This is the moment of spiritual absorption. The King, as the Yajamana (sacrificer), inhales the smoke (dhuma gandham) of the offering. In Vedic ritualism, inhaling the sacred smoke is equivalent to consuming the essence of the sacrifice. This act is performed to cleanse the soul (nirnudan papam atmanah). Before receiving the divine blessing (the son), the recipient must be purified of all past karmic impurities. By smelling the sacrificial smoke at the astrologically and ritually correct moment (yatha kalam), Dasharatha internalizes the power of the Yajna.

यज्ञ का फल प्राप्त करने की यह मुख्य विधि है—'धूम गन्धम् जिघ्रति' (धुएं की गंध लेना)। माना जाता है कि यज्ञ की पवित्र अग्नि में पकी हुई वपा का धुआं पाप-नाशक होता है। दशरथ ने यह कार्य 'यथा कालम्' (सही समय पर) किया। वैदिक विज्ञान के अनुसार, गंध प्राण वायु के माध्यम से शरीर में प्रवेश करती है और अंतःकरण को शुद्ध करती है। 'निर्णुदन् पापम् आत्मनः'—यह क्रिया राजा को निष्पाप बनाती है, जिससे वे संतान प्राप्ति के योग्य पवित्र पात्र बन सकें।
