Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
उद्गात्रे च तथा उदीचीम् दक्षिणैएषा विनिर्मिता ।
अश्वमेधे महायज्ञे स्वयंभु विहिते पुरा ॥ ॥१-१४-४४॥
Udgātre ca tathā udīcīm dakṣiṇāieṣā vinirmitā । Aśvamedhe mahāyajñe svayaṃbhu vihite purā ॥ ॥1-14-44॥
Translation
Likewise, the Northern direction was given to the Udgata priest. This was the prescribed donation for the great Ashvamedha sacrifice as ordained by the Self-Born (Brahma) in ancient times.
हिंदी अनुवाद
इसी प्रकार 'उद्गाता' (सामवेद के गायक) को उत्तर दिशा दी गई। प्राचीन काल में स्वयंभू (ब्रह्मा) द्वारा रचित इस अश्वमेध महायज्ञ में यही दक्षिणा निर्धारित की गई है।
English Commentary
The donation is completed with the Udgata receiving the North. Effectively, King Dasharatha divested himself of his entire empire. The verse justifies this seemingly irrational act by stating it is 'Svayambhu vihite'—ordained by the Creator Brahma himself. The logic of the Ashvamedha is that to gain the status of a World Monarch (Chakravartin) or to gain divine fruit (a son like Vishnu), one must first demonstrate total detachment by giving away the world one currently possesses.

शेष बची उत्तर दिशा 'उद्गाता' को दी गई। इस प्रकार राजा ने अपना पूरा साम्राज्य चारों प्रमुख पुरोहितों में बांट दिया। क्या यह उचित था? वाल्मीकि जी स्पष्ट करते हैं कि यह राजा की मनमर्जी नहीं थी, बल्कि 'स्वयंभु विहिते' (ब्रह्मा द्वारा निर्धारित) नियम था। अश्वमेध यज्ञ का नियम है कि राजा को 'सर्वस्व' दान करना होता है। यह राजा के अहंकार (मैं स्वामी हूँ) को मिटाने और त्याग की पराकाष्ठा को प्रदर्शित करने के लिए है।
