Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
उदारस्य नृवीरस्य धरण्याम् पतितस्य च ।
ततः प्रीत मना रजाअ प्राप्य यज्ञम् अनुत्तमम् ॥ ॥१-१४-५७॥
Udārasya nṛvīrasya dharaṇyām patitasya ca |
Tataḥ prīta manā rājā prāpya yajñam anuttamam ॥1-14-57॥
Translation
Prostrating on the ground, that generous hero among men (Dasharatha) felt cheerful at heart, having completed that unsurpassed sacrifice.
हिंदी अनुवाद
धरती पर साष्टांग प्रणाम करते हुए उस उदार नरवीर (दशरथ) का मन उस सर्वोत्तम यज्ञ को पूरा करके अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुआ।
English Commentary
The image of the King lying on the ground (dharaṇyām patitasya) in prostration is powerful. Despite being a sovereign ruler ("Hero among men"), Dasharatha showed total submission to the divine and the holy men. He achieved peace of mind not just through the rituals, but through this act of surrender. Having completed the "unsurpassed" (anuttamam) Ashwamedha Yajna, which is fraught with obstacles, his heart was finally at ease, filled with the pure joy of spiritual accomplishment.
हिंदी टीका
राजा दशरथ ने 'धरण्याम् पतितस्य' अर्थात भूमि पर लेटकर साष्टांग प्रणाम किया। एक चक्रवर्ती सम्राट का सार्वजनिक रूप से भूमि पर लेटना उसके पूर्ण समर्पण (Surrender) को दर्शाता है। 'अनुत्तमम्' का अर्थ है जिससे उत्तम कुछ और न हो। अश्वमेध यज्ञ पूर्ण करना अत्यंत कठिन कार्य था, और इसे निर्विघ्न संपन्न कर पाने की आत्मसंतुष्टि राजा के चेहरे पर झलक रही थी। वह केवल एक राजा के रूप में नहीं, बल्कि एक भक्त के रूप में ईश्वर और ब्राह्मणों के समक्ष नतमस्तक थे।
