कुलस्य वर्धनम् त्वम् तु कर्तुम् अर्हसि सुव्रत ।
तथेति च स राजानम् उवाच द्विजसत्तमः ।
भविष्यन्ति सुता राजन् चत्वारः ते कुलोद्वहाः ॥ ॥१-१४-५९॥
Kulasya vardhanam tvam tu kartum arhasi suvrata |
Tatheti ca sa rājānam uvāca dvijasattamaḥ |
Bhaviṣyanti sutā rājan catvāraḥ te kulodvahāḥ ॥1-14-59॥
Translation
(Dasharatha requested), "O one of good vows! You are capable of increasing my lineage; please do so." The best of Brahmins (Rishyashringa) replied to the King, "So be it," and said, "O King, four sons will be born to you who will uphold your lineage."
हिंदी अनुवाद
(दशरथ ने कहा) "हे सुव्रत! आप मेरे कुल की वृद्धि करने की कृपा करें।" तब उस द्विजश्रेष्ठ (ऋष्यशृंग) ने राजा से "तथास्तु" (ऐसा ही हो) कहा और भविष्यवाणी की: "हे राजन! आपके कुल का वहन करने वाले चार पुत्र होंगे।"
English Commentary
This verse marks the turning point in King Dasharatha’s life. After the general success of the Ashwamedha, he makes his specific request for an heir. Sage Rishyashringa’s response is definitive: "Tatheti" (So be it). The sage promises not just one, but four sons. The term Kulodvahāḥ is significant; it implies sons who are not merely biological offspring but capable leaders who can "carry the weight" of the dynasty and uphold its dharma. This prophecy sets the stage for the birth of Rama and his brothers.

यह श्लोक दशरथ के जीवन का निर्णायक क्षण है। अश्वमेध यज्ञ की सफलता के बाद, उन्होंने ऋष्यशृंग मुनि से अपनी मूल इच्छा—वंश वृद्धि—को पूर्ण करने की प्रार्थना की। ऋषि का उत्तर "तथेति" (वैसा ही हो) अत्यंत प्रभावशाली है। उन्होंने केवल एक पुत्र नहीं, बल्कि 'चत्वारः' (चार) पुत्रों की भविष्यवाणी की। 'कुलोद्वहाः' शब्द महत्वपूर्ण है, जिसका अर्थ है वे जो कुल के भार को उठा सकें और उसकी कीर्ति को आगे बढ़ा सकें। यहाँ से रामायण का मुख्य कथाचक्र—चार भाइयों का जन्म—आरंभ होता है।
