Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तान् महन्नो भयम् तस्मात् राक्षसात् घोर दर्शनात् ।
वधार्थम् तस्य भगवन् उपायम् कर्तुम् अर्हसि ॥ ॥१-१५-११॥
Tan mahanno bhayam tasmāt rākṣasāt ghora darśanāt |
Vadhārtham tasya bhagavan upāyam kartum arhasi ॥1-15-11॥
Translation
"Therefore, we have great fear of that terrifying Rakshasa. O Lord! You ought to devise a strategy for his slaying."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"इसलिए, उस भयानक दिखने वाले राक्षस से हमें महान भय है। हे भगवन्! उसके वध के लिए आपको कोई उपाय करना चाहिए।"
English Commentary
The Devas conclude their petition by admitting their helplessness. They describe Ravana as ghora darśanāt (of terrifying appearance/nature). Crucially, they ask for a upāyam (strategy/remedy), not just permission to fight. They recognize that brute force is useless against the protective boon Ravana possesses. Since the immunity was granted by Brahma, the Devas rightfully request Brahma to find the loophole within his own law to neutralize the threat.

देवता अपनी समस्या का निष्कर्ष ब्रह्मा जी के सामने रखते हैं। वे रावण को 'घोर दर्शनात्' (भयानक दर्शन वाला) कहते हैं, जो उसके क्रूर व्यक्तित्व को दर्शाता है। देवता सीधे युद्ध की बात नहीं कर रहे, बल्कि 'उपायम्' (युक्ति/Strategy) मांग रहे हैं। वे जानते हैं कि ब्रह्मा के वरदान के कारण रावण को सीधे बल प्रयोग से नहीं मारा जा सकता। समस्या की जड़ (वरदान) ब्रह्मा जी से आई थी, इसलिए समाधान (उपाय) भी उन्हीं से आना चाहिए।
