विष्णो पुत्रत्वम् आगच्छ कृत्वा आत्मानम् चतुर्विधम् ।
तत्र त्वम् मानुषो भूत्वा प्रवृद्धम् लोक कण्टकम् ॥ ॥१-१५-२१॥
Viṣṇo putratvam āgaccha kṛtvā ātmānam caturvidham । Tatra tvam mānuṣo bhūtvā pravṛddham loka kaṇṭakam ॥ ॥1-15-21॥
Translation
O Vishnu! Please transform Yourself into four forms and become his sons. Thereafter, becoming a human, destroy that arrogant tyrant who has become a thorn in the side of the worlds.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे विष्णु! आप स्वयं को चार भागों में विभक्त कर उनके पुत्र बन जाइये। वहाँ मनुष्य बनकर आप उस अत्यंत प्रबल और लोकों के लिए काँटा बने हुए (रावण) का संहार करें।
English Commentary
The phrase kṛtvā ātmānam caturvidham (making yourself four-fold) is the scriptural basis for the divinity of all four brothers: Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata, and Shatrughna. The Devas explicitly specify the condition: mānuṣo bhūtvā (having become a human). This refers to the specific boon of Ravana, who sought immunity from gods and demons but arrogantly neglected to ask for immunity from humans. Vishnu must assume the very form Ravana despised to eliminate the "thorn of the world."

यहाँ ‘आत्मानम् चतुर्विधम्’ (अपने को चार प्रकार से) का उल्लेख अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। यह राम, लक्ष्मण, भरत और शत्रुघ्न के रूप में विष्णु के अंशावतार का संकेत है। देवता स्पष्ट कहते हैं कि ‘मानुषो भूत्वा’—अर्थात मनुष्य बनकर ही यह कार्य संभव है। रावण को ब्रह्मा जी का वरदान था कि उसे देवता, गंधर्व, यक्ष आदि नहीं मार सकते, परन्तु उसने अभिमानवश ‘मनुष्य’ को तुच्छ समझकर वरदान में उसका नाम नहीं लिया था। विष्णु को उसी तकनीकी भूल (loophole) का प्रयोग कर रावण का अंत करना था।
