Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अवध्यम् दैवतैः विष्णो समरे जहि रावणम् ।
स हि देवान् स गन्धर्वान् सिद्धान् च ऋषि सत्तमान् ॥ ॥१-१५-२२॥
Avadhyam daivataiḥ Viṣṇo samare jahi Rāvaṇam । Sa hi devān sa gandharvān siddhān ca ṛṣi sattamān ॥ ॥1-15-22॥
Translation
O Vishnu! Since he cannot be killed by the gods, You must kill Ravana in battle. He indeed torments the Devas, Gandharvas, Siddhas, and the foremost Sages.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे विष्णु! वह देवताओं द्वारा अवध्य (न मारे जाने योग्य) है, अतः आप युद्ध में उस रावण को मारें। वह देवताओं, गंधर्भों, सिद्धों और श्रेष्ठ ऋषियों को (अत्यंत पीड़ित करता है)।
English Commentary
The core problem is stated here: Ravana is avadhyam daivataiḥ (invincible against gods). The Devas admit their helplessness. Ravana’s tyranny is not limited to earth; it extends to the celestial beings and sages. This verse justifies the incarnation—when evil becomes so potent that the cosmic administrators (Devas) are powerless, the Supreme Preserver must intervene to exploit the tyrant's only weakness (mortality).

यहाँ समस्या का मूल कारण बताया गया है—रावण की ‘दैवतैः अवध्यता’ (देवताओं द्वारा न मरने की स्थिति)। देवता अपनी असमर्थता स्वीकार कर रहे हैं। रावण का अत्याचार केवल पृथ्वी तक सीमित नहीं है; वह स्वर्ग और तपस्वियों के लोकों तक फैला हुआ है। जब बुराई इतनी शक्तिशाली हो जाए कि देवता भी असहाय हो जाएँ, तब उस शक्ति का (विष्णु का) हस्तक्षेप अनिवार्य हो जाता है जो नियमों से परे है या जो नियमों के भीतर रहकर भी असंभव को संभव कर सके।
