Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
वत्स्यामि मानुषे लोके पालयन् पृध्वीम् इमाम् ।
एवम् दत्वा वरम् देवो देवानाम् विष्णुः आत्मवान् ॥ ॥१-१५-३०॥
Vatsyāmi mānuṣe loke pālayan pṛdhvīm imām । Evam datvā varam devo devānām Viṣṇuḥ ātmavān ॥ ॥1-15-30॥
Translation
"I shall reside in the human world, protecting this earth." Having thus granted this boon to the gods, the self-controlled Lord Vishnu (began to contemplate).

"मैं इस पृथ्वी का पालन करता हुआ मनुष्य लोक में निवास करूँगा।" देवताओं को इस प्रकार वर देकर, आत्मविजयी (आत्मवान) भगवान विष्णु (ने विचार किया)।
English Commentary
The word Pālayan (protecting/nurturing) is key. Vishnu’s primary cosmic function is preservation. He clarifies that He is descending not to enjoy the earth, but to serve it. Vishnu is described as Ātmavān (Self-possessed/Master of the Self), indicating that His birth is not a result of karma (like ordinary humans) but a voluntary descent driven by His own will and sovereignty to restore order.
