तम् उद्धतम् रावणम् उग्र तेजसम् प्रवृद्ध दर्पम् त्रिदशेश्वर वर द्विषम् ।
विरावणम् साधु तपस्वि कण्टकम् तपस्विनाम् उद्धर तम् भयाअवहम् ॥ ॥१-१५-३३॥
Tam uddhatam Rāvaṇam ugra tejasam Pravṛddha darpam tridaśeśvara vara dviṣam । Virāvaṇam sādhu tapasvi kaṇṭakam Tapasvinām uddhara tam bhayāavaham ॥ ॥1-15-33॥
Translation
(The Devas prayed): "Please uproot that arrogant Ravana, who possesses terrible energy, whose pride has swollen, who hates the King of Gods (Indra), who makes the world cry (Virāvaṇam), and who is a thorn and a source of terror to the ascetics."
हिंदी अनुवाद
(देवताओं ने कहा): "आप उस उद्दंड, भयानक तेज वाले, बढ़े हुए घमंड वाले, देवराज इंद्र से द्वेष रखने वाले, सबको रुलाने वाले (विरावण), साधु-तपस्वियों के लिए काँटा (कष्टप्रद) और भय उत्पन्न करने वाले रावण को जड़ से उखाड़ फेंकिये।"
English Commentary
This verse vividly characterizes the antagonist. Ravana is described as Virāvaṇam—literally "he who makes others cry aloud." The Devas incite Vishnu’s warrior spirit by listing Ravana’s crimes: his arrogance (uddhatam), his hatred for authority (Indra), and his oppression of the innocent (sages). Calling him a kantaka (thorn) implies that he is an unnatural irritant in the cosmic body that must be surgically removed.

यह श्लोक रावण के दुष्ट व्यक्तित्व का पूर्ण चित्रण है। उसे 'विरावणम्' कहा गया है—जिसका अर्थ है 'जो दूसरों को विशेष रूप से रुलाता है'। देवता विष्णु को एक योद्धा के रूप में प्रोत्साहित कर रहे हैं। यहाँ छन्द (meter) बदलता है जो स्तुति की भव्यता और देवताओं के आवेश को दर्शाता है। वे उसे 'कण्टक' (काँटा) कहते हैं, जिसे शरीर (समाज) से बाहर निकालना ही एकमात्र उपचार है।
