ततः परम् तदा राजा प्रति उवाच कृत अंजलिः ।
भगवन् स्वागतम् तेऽस्तु किमहम् करवाणि ते ॥ ॥१-१६-१७॥
tataḥ param tadā rājā prati uvāca kṛta añjaliḥ |
bhagavan svāgatam te'stu kimaham karavāṇi te ॥1-16-17॥
Translation
Thereupon, the King, with folded hands, replied to him: "O Lord, welcome to you. What may I do for you?"

तब राजा दशरथ ने हाथ जोड़कर उस पुरुष को उत्तर दिया: "हे भगवन! आपका स्वागत है। आज्ञा दीजिये, मैं आपके लिए क्या कर सकता हूँ?"
English Commentary
King Dasharatha's response exemplifies the ideal conduct of an Aryan king—humility coupled with dignity. Despite being the ruler of the earth, he stands with Krita Anjali (palms joined in reverence) before the divine messenger. His first instinct is not to grab the reward he has been praying for, but to offer hospitality and service ("What can I do for you?"). This reflects profound spiritual discipline; even in the face of overwhelming desire (the need for a son), he does not forget his duty (Dharma) towards a guest. He treats the messenger with the reverence due to a god (Bhagavan), proving his worthiness to receive the divine blessing that is about to be bestowed.

राजा दशरथ का यह उत्तर उनकी विनम्रता और संस्कारों का परिचायक है। यद्यपि वे चक्रवर्ती सम्राट हैं, परन्तु एक दैवीय शक्ति के सामने वे 'कृत अंजलिः' (हाथ जोड़े हुए) खड़े हैं। वे उस पुरुष को 'भगवन' कहकर संबोधित करते हैं, जो सर्वोच्च सम्मान का सूचक है। "मैं आपके लिए क्या करूँ?" पूछना उनकी सेवा भावना को दर्शाता है। राजा यह नहीं पूछते कि "तुम मेरे लिए क्या लाए हो?", बल्कि यह पूछते हैं कि "मैं तुम्हारी क्या सेवा कर सकता हूँ?" यह "अतिथि देवो भव" की भारतीय परंपरा का उत्कृष्ट उदाहरण है, जहाँ याचक या आगंतुक का सत्कार स्वयं की इच्छाओं से पहले आता है, भले ही वह आगंतुक वरदान देने ही क्यों न आया हो।
