अवज्ञाताः पुरा तेन वरदाने हि मानवाः ।
एवम् पितामहात् तस्मात् वरदानेन गर्वितः ॥ ॥१-१६-६॥
Avajñātāḥ purā tena varadāne hi mānavāḥ । Evam pitāmahāt tasmāt varadānena garvitaḥ ॥ ॥1-16-6॥
Translation
"Indeed, at the time of asking for the boon, humans were disregarded by him (as insignificant). Thus, having received the boon from the Grandfather, he has become arrogant."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"वरदान मांगते समय उसने मनुष्यों की अवहेलना (अवज्ञा) की थी (कि वे तुच्छ हैं)। इस प्रकार पितामह (ब्रह्मा) से वरदान पाकर वह अत्यंत घमंडी हो गया है।"
English Commentary
This verse highlights Ravana's fatal flaw: Hubris. He avajñātāḥ (disregarded with contempt) humans, deeming them too weak to be a threat. His downfall stems not from a lack of power, but from an underestimation of life forms he considered inferior. The boon, intended for protection, fueled his arrogance (garvitaḥ), blinding him to the fact that his vulnerability lay in the very species he despised.

यहाँ रावण की मनोवैज्ञानिक स्थिति का वर्णन है। 'अवज्ञाताः' (तिरस्कृत/तुच्छ समझे गए) शब्द महत्वपूर्ण है। रावण का पतन उसके अज्ञान के कारण नहीं, बल्कि उसके अहंकार (Hubris) के कारण निश्चित हुआ। उसने मनुष्य को इतना कमजोर समझा कि उन्हें अपनी 'न मरने वाली' सूची में डालना भी जरूरी नहीं समझा। यही अहंकार उसका काल बनेगा। वरदान पाकर 'गर्वित' (घमंडी) होना शक्ति के दुरुपयोग की शुरुआत है।
