बृहस्पतिः तु अजनयत् तारम् नाम महा कपिम् ।
सर्व वानर मुख्यानाम् बुद्धिमन्तम् अनुत्तमम् ॥ ॥१-१७-११॥
bṛhaspatiḥ tu ajanayat tāram nāma mahā kapim |
sarva vānara mukhyānām buddhimantam anuttamam ॥1-17-11॥
Translation
Brihaspati procreated the great monkey named Tara, who was the most intelligent and excellent among all the Vanara chiefs.

देवगुरु बृहस्पति ने 'तार' नाम के महाकपि को उत्पन्न किया, जो सभी वानर यूथपतियों में सबसे अधिक बुद्धिमान और श्रेष्ठ थे।
English Commentary
Clarification: This verse refers to a male monkey chief named Tara, not to be confused with Tara, the wife of Vali. Brihaspati, the Guru of the Devas and the presiding deity of wisdom/intellect, sired Tara. Consequently, Tara is described as buddhimantam anuttamam (unsurpassed in intelligence) among all Vanara leaders. Just as Brihaspati advises Indra, the monkey leader Tara serves as a strategic commander within the Vanara army. The use of the masculine accusative Mahakapim confirms the gender.

विशेष नोट: रामायण में दो 'तार' हैं। एक वाली की पत्नी 'तारा' (स्त्री) और एक वानर सेनापति 'तार' (पुरुष)। यह श्लोक पुरुष वानर 'तार' के बारे में है, जिसे 'महा कपिम्' (महान नर वानर) कहा गया है। चूँकि इनके पिता बृहस्पति (देवताओं के गुरु और बुद्धि के देवता) हैं, इसलिए तार को 'बुद्धिमन्तम् अनुत्तमम्' (बुद्धिमानों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ) कहा गया है। युद्ध कांड में तार नामक सेनापति का उल्लेख आता है जो अत्यंत वीर था। अक्सर लोग इसे वाली की पत्नी तारा समझ लेते हैं, लेकिन संस्कृत व्याकरण (पुल्लिंग प्रयोग) यहाँ स्पष्ट करता है कि यह एक नर वानर है।
