Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
रूप द्रविण संपन्नौ अश्विनौ रूपसंमतौ ।
मैन्दम् च द्विविदम् च एव जनयामासतुः स्वयम् ॥ ॥१-१७-१४॥
Rūpa draviṇa saṃpannau Aśvinau rūpasaṃmatau । Maindam ca Dvividam ca eva janayāmāsatuḥ svayam ॥ ॥1-17-14॥
Translation
The Ashvini Kumaras, who are rich in beauty and celebrated for their appearance, themselves begot the two monkeys named Mainda and Dvivida.

रूप और गुणों के धनी तथा सुंदरता में प्रसिद्ध दोनों अश्विनीकुमारों ने स्वयं 'मैन्द' और 'द्विविद' नामक दो वानरों को उत्पन्न किया।
English Commentary
This verse details the birth of the warrior twins, Mainda and Dvivida. They were sired by the Ashvini Kumaras, the twin physicians of the gods known for their unmatched beauty (Rūpa). Consequently, Mainda and Dvivida are described as possessing great grace and strength. In the epic, these two serve as high-ranking generals. Their lineage suggests not just physical strength but a divine vitality. Being born of the divine physicians, they represent the healing and restorative power of the army, yet they were formidable warriors capable of crushing enemies with their bare hands.

यहाँ अश्विनीकुमारों (देवताओं के वैद्य) द्वारा मैन्द और द्विविद की उत्पत्ति बताई गई है। अश्विनीकुमार जुड़वाँ हैं और अपनी सुंदरता के लिए तीनों लोकों में प्रसिद्ध हैं। उनके पुत्रों, मैन्द और द्विविद, ने भी अपने पिताओं से रूप और बल प्राप्त किया। रामायण में, ये दोनों वानर अपनी विशिष्ट शक्ति और अमृत-पान के प्रभाव के लिए जाने जाते हैं (महाभारत के प्रसंगानुसार)। वे ब्रह्मा जी के वरदान से अवध्य माने जाते थे। युद्ध में वे सदैव साथ लड़ते थे, जो अश्विनीकुमारों के द्वित्व (duality) का ही प्रतिबिम्ब था।
