वरुणो जनयामास सुषेणम् नाम वानरम् ।
शरभम् जनयामास पर्जन्यः तु महाबलः ॥ ॥१-१७-१५॥
Varuṇo janayāmāsa Suṣeṇam nāma vānaram । Śarabham janayāmāsa Parjanyaḥ tu mahābalaḥ ॥ ॥1-17-15॥
Translation
Varuna (the God of Water) begot the Vanara named Sushena, while the mighty Parjanya (the Rain God) begot Sharabha.

वरुण देव ने 'सुषेण' नामक वानर को उत्पन्न किया और महाबली पर्जन्य ने 'शरभ' नामक वानर को जन्म दिया।
English Commentary
This verse connects the elements of water and rain to the Vanara lineage. Sushena, born of Varuna (Lord of Oceans/Water), is a pivotal figure of wisdom and medicine within the monkey clan. Later in the epic, Sushena plays a critical role in identifying herbs to heal Rama and Lakshmana, fitting for the son of a life-sustaining deity. Sharabha, born of Parjanya (the thunderous Rain God), inherits immense strength (Mahabalah). The mention of these specific fathers underscores that the Vanara army was supported by the elemental forces of nature itself.

सुषेण वानरराज वाली के श्वसुर और तारा के पिता थे। चूँकि वे जल के देवता वरुण के पुत्र थे, उनमें गंभीरता और गहराई थी। सुषेण एक महान वैद्य भी थे (युद्ध कांड में इनके चिकित्सा ज्ञान का परिचय मिलता है)। दूसरी ओर, पर्जन्य (वर्षा के देवता) के पुत्र शरभ थे। पर्जन्य शक्ति और वेग का प्रतीक हैं, अतः शरभ भी अत्यंत बलवान (महाबलः) थे। ये वानर केवल योद्धा नहीं थे, बल्कि इनके पास विशिष्ट दैवीय गुण थे जो राम के वनवास और युद्ध के दौरान विभिन्न भूमिकाओं में काम आए।
