Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अप्सरस्सु च मुख्यासु तदा विद्यधरीषु च ।
नाग कन्यासु च तदा गन्धर्वीणाम् तनूषु च ।
काम रूप बलोपेता यथा काम विचारिणः ॥ ॥१-१७-२४॥
Apsarassu ca mukhyāsu tadā vidyadharīṣu ca । Nāga kanyāsu ca tadā gandharvīṇām tanūṣu ca । Kāma rūpa balopetā yathā kāma vicāriṇaḥ ॥ ॥1-17-24॥
Translation
They were born from principal Apsaras, Vidyadharis, Naga maidens, and Gandharva women. They possessed the power to change form at will (Kama rupa), immense strength, and roamed freely wherever they pleased.

मुख्य अप्सराओं, विद्याधरियों, नाग कन्याओं और गन्धर्व स्त्रियों के गर्भ से ये वानर उत्पन्न हुए। वे इच्छानुसार रूप धारण करने की शक्ति और बल से संपन्न थे तथा जहाँ चाहे वहाँ विचरण करते थे।
English Commentary
This verse establishes the maternal nobility of the Vanara warriors. Being born of Apsaras, Vidyadharis, and Naga maidens meant they inherited magical properties alongside physical strength. The phrase Kama rupa balopeta (endowed with the strength to change form at will) is crucial. It explains how the Vanaras could later infiltrate Lanka or grow to the size of mountains. They were semi-divine shapeshifters, not mere animals.

यह श्लोक वानरों की माताओं (Matrilineal lineage) के बारे में है। वे साधारण वानरियों से नहीं, बल्कि अप्सराओं और गन्धर्वियों जैसी उच्च कोटि की देव-शक्तियों से जन्में थे। 'काम रूप बलोपेता' का अर्थ है कि उनमें मायावी शक्ति थी; वे केवल पशु बल पर निर्भर नहीं थे, बल्कि युद्ध में छल और रणनीति के लिए अपना रूप बदल सकते थे। यह गुण लंका के मायावी राक्षसों से लड़ने के लिए अनिवार्य था।
