Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अप्सरस्सु च मुख्यासु गन्धर्वाणाम् तनूषु च ।
यक्ष पन्नग कन्यासु ऋक्ष विद्याधरीषु च ॥ ॥१-१७-५॥
apsarassu ca mukhyāsu gandharvāṇām tanūṣu ca |
yakṣa pannaga kanyāsu ṛkṣa vidyādhariṣu ca ॥1-17-5॥
Translation
(O Gods!) Procreate them in the wombs of principal Apsaras, wives of Gandharvas, daughters of Yakshas and Pannagas (serpents), and females of the Rikshas (bears) and Vidyadharas.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(हे देवताओं!) तुम मुख्य अप्सराओं, गन्धर्व स्त्रियों, यक्ष और नाग (पन्नग) कन्याओं, तथा रीछ और विद्याधरों की स्त्रियों के गर्भ से (इन्हें उत्पन्न करो)।
English Commentary
Brahma lists the surrogate mothers for this divine army. The Vanaras were not born of ordinary earthly monkeys but were conceived in the wombs of celestial nymphs (Apsaras), Gandharvas, Yakshas, and Nagas. This genetic diversity explains the varied supernatural abilities of the Vanara chiefs—flight, shape-shifting, and immense strength. By utilizing mothers from these semi-divine classes, the gods ensured the offspring would bridge the gap between heaven and earth, possessing celestial powers within terrestrial forms.

ब्रह्मा जी यहाँ 'योनि' या जन्म के माध्यम का निर्देश दे रहे हैं। वानर सेना केवल वानर-मादाओं से उत्पन्न नहीं हुई थी, बल्कि विभिन्न उच्च लोकों की देवियों और उप-देवताओं की पत्नियों के माध्यम से इनका जन्म हुआ। यक्ष, गन्धर्व, नाग और विद्याधर—ये सभी देव-योनि के प्राणी हैं। इन माताओं के कारण ही वानरों में आकाश में उड़ने (विद्याधर गुण), रूप बदलने (यक्ष/गन्धर्व गुण) और अपार बल (नाग गुण) की क्षमता आई। यह 'क्रॉस-ब्रीडिंग' (दैवीय संकरण) थी जिससे एक सुपर-प्रजाति का निर्माण हुआ।
