Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
राज्ञः पुत्रा महात्मानः चत्वारो जज्ञिरे पृथक् ।
गुणवंतः अनुरूपाः च रुच्या प्रोष्ठपदोपमाः ॥१-१८-१६॥
rājñaḥ putrā mahātmānaḥ catvāro jajñire pṛthak |
guṇavaṃtaḥ anurūpāḥ ca rucyā proṣṭhapadopamāḥ ॥1-18-16॥
Translation
Four high-souled sons were born to the King separately (from different mothers). Possessing great virtues and beauty, they shone resplendently like the four stars of the Proshthapada constellation.

राजा दशरथ के यहाँ चार पृथक (अलग-अलग माताओं से) महात्मा पुत्रों ने जन्म लिया। वे सभी गुणवान, सुंदर और 'प्रोष्ठपदा' (भाद्रपद) नक्षत्र के चार तारों के समान कांतिवान थे।
English Commentary
This verse marks the culmination of the Putrakameshti Yajna, celebrating the arrival of the four sons. Valmiki uses the simile of the 'Proshthapada' constellation (modern-day Pegasus square or the stars of Bhadrapada), which consists of four stars forming a perfect square. This comparison suggests equality, symmetry, and combined brilliance among the brothers. Just as these stars are distinct yet form a cohesive unit in the sky, the four brothers, though born of different mothers ('prithak'), form a harmonious unit of dharma. The term 'mahatmanah' (great-souled) used for infants foreshadows their divine origin and the magnitude of the tasks they are destined to perform. It establishes that their greatness is intrinsic, not just acquired.

यह श्लोक राजा दशरथ के चारों पुत्रों—राम, भरत, लक्ष्मण और शत्रुघ्न—के जन्म और उनके दिव्य स्वरूप का वर्णन करता है। महर्षि वाल्मीकि यहाँ एक विशिष्ट उपमा का प्रयोग करते हैं; वे राजकुमारों की तुलना 'प्रोष्ठपदा' से करते हैं। ज्योतिष शास्त्र में प्रोष्ठपदा (जिसे भाद्रपद भी कहा जाता है) नक्षत्र के चार तारे एक वर्ग का निर्माण करते हैं। जिस प्रकार वे तारे आकाश में एक साथ सुशोभित होते हैं, उसी प्रकार ये चार भाई इक्ष्वाकु वंश के आकाश में उदित हुए हैं। 'महात्मानः' शब्द यह इंगित करता है कि यद्यपि वे अभी शिशु हैं, उनका आत्मबल और पूर्व निश्चित प्रारब्ध महान है। 'अनुरूपाः' का अर्थ है कि वे अपने पिता और अपने उच्च कुल के अनुरूप ही सौंदर्य और गुणों से संपन्न हैं। यह उपमा उनके भविष्य की एकता और सामंजस्य का भी संकेत देती है।
