सौमित्रिम् लक्ष्मणम् इति शत्रुघ्नम् अपरम् तथा ।
वसिष्ठः परम प्रीतो नामानि कुरुते तदा ॥१-१८-२२॥
saumitrim lakṣmaṇam iti śatrughnam aparam tathā |
vasiṣṭhaḥ parama prīto nāmāni kurute tadā ॥1-18-22॥
Translation
Sumitra's son was named 'Lakshmana' and the other was named 'Shatrughna'. At that time, Vasistha, filled with supreme joy, bestowed these names.

सुमित्रा के (एक) पुत्र का नाम 'लक्ष्मण' और दूसरे का नाम 'शत्रुघ्न' रखा। उस समय परम प्रसन्न होकर वशिष्ठ जी ने ये नाम रखे।
English Commentary
The naming continues for the twins born to Sumitra. Vasistha, the Kula-guru (family preceptor), performs this role with 'supreme joy' (parama prito), indicating his spiritual insight into the divinity of the children. 'Lakshmana' implies one possessing 'Lakshmi' (auspicious signs/wealth of character). It denotes one who is marked for greatness or service. 'Shatrughna' means 'the slayer of foes'. While Lakshmana is destined to serve Rama, Shatrughna is destined to be the constant companion of Bharata. The intervention of Vasistha validates the sanctity of these names; they are not chosen randomly but are divinely inspired to reflect the inherent qualities and destinies of the princes.

सुमित्रा के जुड़वां पुत्रों का नामकरण यहाँ संपन्न होता है। एक का नाम 'लक्ष्मण' रखा गया, जिसका अर्थ है 'लक्ष्मियुक्त' या 'शुभ लक्षणों से संपन्न'। लक्ष्मण का जीवन सेवा और समर्पण का प्रतीक बना। दूसरे पुत्र का नाम 'शत्रुघ्न' रखा गया, जिसका अर्थ है 'शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाला'—चाहे वे बाहरी शत्रु हों या आंतरिक (काम, क्रोध आदि)। महत्त्वपूर्ण बात यह है कि यहाँ 'वसिष्ठः' का नाम स्पष्ट रूप से आया है। कुलगुरु वशिष्ठ 'परम प्रीतो' (अत्यंत प्रसन्न) थे क्योंकि वे त्रिकालदर्शी थे; वे जानते थे कि ये बालक सामान्य नहीं हैं, बल्कि भूभार हरण करने वाले दिव्य अंश हैं। गुरु की प्रसन्नता शिष्य के उज्ज्वल भविष्य का आशीर्वाद होती है।
