Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
इष्टः सर्वस्य लोकस्य शशांक इव निर्मलः ।
गज स्कन्धे अश्व पृष्टे च रथ चर्यासु सम्मतः ॥१-१८-२७॥
iṣṭaḥ sarvasya lokasya śaśāṃka iva nirmalaḥ |
gaja skandhe aśva pṛṣṭe ca ratha caryāsu sammataḥ ॥1-18-27॥
Translation
He was beloved to the whole world like the spotless Moon. He was acknowledged as an expert in riding elephants, horses, and in driving chariots.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे (राम) निष्कलंक चंद्रमा के समान समस्त संसार के प्रिय थे। हाथी की सवारी (गज विद्या), घुड़सवारी और रथ संचालन की कलाओं में वे अत्यंत निपुण माने जाते थे।
English Commentary
This verse juxtaposes Rama's gentle demeanor with his martial competence. The simile of the 'spotless Moon' (Shashanka iva nirmalah) suggests that his popularity stemmed from his soothing and approachable nature, devoid of the scorching heat often associated with power. However, he was not soft in capabilities. Being an expert on 'elephant shoulders', 'horse backs', and in 'chariot movements' covers the spectrum of ancient Aryan warfare mobility. Valmiki portrays Rama as the complete prince: possessing the charm to win hearts and the martial skill to defend the realm.

यहाँ राम के व्यक्तित्व के दो पहलुओं का संतुलन दिखाया गया है—सौम्यता और वीरता। 'शशांक इव निर्मलः' (चंद्रमा के समान निर्मल) उपमा यह बताती है कि राम का व्यक्तित्व शीतलता और आनंद प्रदान करने वाला है, जो प्रजा को अपनी ओर आकर्षित करता है। दूसरी पंक्ति में उनकी क्षत्रियोचित विद्याओं का वर्णन है। प्राचीन युद्धनीति में 'गज', 'अश्व' और 'रथ'—ये चतुरंगिणी सेना के तीन प्रमुख अंग थे। राम इन तीनों के संचालन में 'सम्मतः' (विशेषज्ञ/मान्य) थे। यह दर्शाता है कि एक आदर्श राजा को न केवल लोकप्रिय होना चाहिए, बल्कि राज्य की रक्षा के लिए सामरिक रूप से दक्ष भी होना चाहिए।
