लक्ष्मणो लक्ष्मि संपन्नो बहिः प्राण इव अपरः ।
न च तेन विना निद्राम् लभते पुरुषोत्तमः ॥१-१८-३०॥
lakṣmaṇo lakṣmi saṃpanno bahiḥ prāṇa iva aparaḥ |
na ca tena vinā nidrām labhate puruṣottamaḥ ॥1-18-30॥
Translation
Lakshmana, endowed with auspicious marks, was like another life-breath (Prana) moving outside. Without him, Rama, the best among men, could not even get sleep.
हिंदी अनुवाद
लक्ष्मीसंपन्न लक्ष्मण, राम के दूसरे 'बाहरी प्राण' के समान थे। उन (लक्ष्मण) के बिना पुरुषोत्तम राम को नींद भी नहीं आती थी।
English Commentary
This verse is iconic in describing the relationship between Rama and Lakshmana. The metaphor bahih prana (external life-force) suggests that while they were physically distinct, they shared a single vital force. If Lakshmana is the breath, Rama is the life it sustains. The detail that Rama could not sleep without Lakshmana emphasizes the physiological depth of their psychological bond. It humanizes Rama (Purushottama), showing that even the Supreme Person, in his human avatar, experiences profound attachment and longing for his companion.

यहाँ महर्षि वाल्मीकि 'बहिः प्राण' (शरीर के बाहर विचरण करने वाला प्राण) का रूपक प्रयोग करते हैं। जैसे प्राण के बिना जीवन संभव नहीं, वैसे ही लक्ष्मण के बिना राम की दिनचर्या संभव नहीं थी। 'पुरुषोत्तम' शब्द का प्रयोग राम के लिए किया गया है, जो यह दर्शाता है कि पुरुषों में श्रेष्ठ होते हुए भी वे मानवीय भावनाओं और स्नेह के बंधन से मुक्त नहीं थे। राम को लक्ष्मण के बिना नींद न आना यह बताता है कि बचपन में वे एक साथ ही सोते थे और लक्ष्मण की उपस्थिति राम के लिए सुरक्षा और शांति का पर्याय थी। यह भावनात्मक निर्भरता उनके वनवास के दौरान भी अटूट रही।
