पात्र भूतोऽसि मे ब्रह्मन् दिष्ट्या प्राप्तोऽसि मानद ।
अद्य मे सफलम् जन्म जीवितम् च सु जीवितम् ॥ ॥१-१८-५३॥
Pātra bhūto'si me brahman diṣṭyā prāpto'si mānada । Adya me safalam janma jīvitam ca su jīvitam ॥ ॥1-18-53॥
Translation
"O Brahmin, you are the most worthy recipient of my reverence. O Bestower of Honor, by good fortune you have arrived. Today my birth has become fruitful, and my life truly well-lived."

"हे ब्रह्मन्! आप मेरे लिए पूज्य सत्पात्र हैं। हे मानद (दूसरों को मान देने वाले)! सौभाग्य से आप यहाँ पधारे हैं। आज मेरा जन्म सफल हो गया और मेरा जीवन उत्तम जीवन बन गया।"
English Commentary
Dasharath refers to Vishvamitra as a 'Patra' (a worthy vessel/recipient). In Vedic dharma, giving charity or service yields merit only when given to a worthy person; Vishvamitra is the ultimate recipient. He calls the sage 'Manada' (one who gives honor), acknowledging that the sage’s visit confers prestige upon the King. The declaration that his birth and life have become "fruitful" ('safalam') today underscores the belief that the company of the enlightened is the highest goal of human existence. Dasharatha feels that all his years of ruling and living have culminated in this auspicious moment, validating his existence as a righteous king.

दशरथ विश्वामित्र को 'पात्र' (योग्य व्यक्ति) कहते हैं। दान या सेवा उसी को देनी चाहिए जो उसका अधिकारी हो, और विश्वामित्र से श्रेष्ठ पात्र कोई नहीं हो सकता। वे ऋषि को 'मानद' कहते हैं—अर्थात् जो दूसरों का मान बढ़ाते हैं। विश्वामित्र के आने से दशरथ का मान बढ़ा है। 'अद्य मे सफलम् जन्म'—हिंदू दर्शन में माना जाता है कि मानव जीवन का लक्ष्य संतों का संग और धर्म का पालन है। दशरथ को लगता है कि आज ऋषि के चरणों की धूल उनके महल में पड़ने से उनके पूर्वजों का पुण्य और उनका अपना जीवन सार्थक हो गया है। यह भक्ति की पराकाष्ठा है।
