तस्मात् तु मिथुनात् एकम् पुमांसम् पाप निश्चयः ।
जघान वैरनिलयो निषादः तस्य पश्यतः ॥१-२-१०॥
tasmāt tu mithunāt ekam pumāṁsam pāpa-niścayaḥ |
jaghāna vaira-nilayo niṣādaḥ tasya paśyataḥ ॥1-2-10॥
Translation
And from that couple, a Niṣāda (hunter), the abode of cruelty and of wicked resolve, struck down the one male bird while the sage (Vālmīki) was looking on.

इसलिए एक जोड़े में से, एक निषाद (शिकारी), विनाश और दुष्ट विचार के साथ, ने एक नर पक्षी को मारा, जबकि ऋषि (वाल्मीकि) देख रहे थे।
English Commentary
This verse describes a single, powerful, and cruel event that shatters the tranquility of the forest and triggers the entire Ramayana epic. It is arguably the most important verse in the entire Bala Kanda as it explains the origin of the shloka meter. The essential action is starkly brutal: the hunter (Niṣāda) struck down the male bird from the inseparable couple. This act represents a violation of life, love, and the sacred harmony of nature that Vālmīki had just praised. The hunter is characterized with severe epithets which amplify the nature of his act. The phrase 'while he was looking on' makes clear Vālmīki's helplessness, showing the impact of violence not only on the bird but also on the sage's serene mind. This seemingly small incident foreshadows the larger tragedy in the Ramayana, mirroring the grief, struggle, and separation that will prevail in the epic.
