Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स तु तीरम् समासाद्य तमसाया मुनिः तदा ।
शिष्यम् आह स्थितम् पार्श्वे दृष्ट्वा तीर्थम् अकर्दमम् ॥१-२-४॥
sa tu tīram samāsādhya tamasāyā muniḥ tadā |
śiṣyam āha sthitam pārśve dṛṣṭvā tīrtham akardamam ॥1-2-4॥
Translation
And having reached the bank of the Tamasā, the sage (Vālmīki) then spoke to his disciple, who was standing beside him, after seeing a bathing place that was clear of mud.

और तामस सागर के तट पर पहुँचकर, मुनि तब अपने शिष्य से बोले, जो उनके पास खड़ा था, उसने साफ-सुथरी तीर्थ भूमि को देखा।
English Commentary
This verse continues the immediate action following Vālmīki's arrival at the riverbank and prepares the stage for the pivotal event of the Ramayana. Vālmīki is a sage devoted to religious duties (nitya-karmas), which include bathing (snāna) and meditation (sandhyā) at the time of day. Having found a spot, he prepares for his ritual purification. The detail of the tīrtham akardamam (a clean bathing place, free from mud) emphasizes the sage's commitment to purity, both external (clean water) and internal (clean mind). The presence of the disciple is significant, providing both witness and interlocutor for the sage's forthcoming actions. The verse concludes with the sage āha (said), heightening anticipation for the transformative words Vālmīki is about to utter.
