अकर्दमम् इदं तीर्थं भरद्वाज निशामय ।
रमणीयं प्रसन्नाम्बु सन्मनुष्यमनो यथा ॥१-२-५॥
akardamam idaṁ tīrthaṁ bharadvāja niśāmaya |
ramaṇīyaṁ prasannāmbu san-manuṣya-mano yathā ॥1-2-5॥
Translation
"O Bharadvāja, behold this holy spot! It is without mud and has clear, delightful water, just like the mind of a virtuous man."

"हे भरद्वाज, इस पवित्र स्थान को देखो! यह कीचड़ रहित है और साफ, सुंदर पानी है, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे एक virtuous मनुष्य का मन।"
English Commentary
This verse is highly significant as it provides the first explicit simile of the Ramayana and acts as a profound statement on the qualities of a pure mind. The introduction of the disciple, Bharadvāja, marks the first personal address by name and draws attention to the lesson hidden in nature. The sage Vālmīki makes a striking analogy between clear water and the mind of a virtuous man.
