Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
कृच्छ्रेण उत्पादितः च अयम् न रामम् नेतुम् अर्हसि ।
चतुर्णाम् आत्मजानाम् हि प्रीतिः परमिका मम ॥ ॥१-२०-११॥
Kṛcchreṇa utpāditaḥ ca ayam na rāmam netum arhasi । Caturṇām ātmajānām hi prītiḥ paramikā mama ॥ ॥1-20-11॥
Translation
He has been begotten with great difficulty; you ought not to take Rama. Among my four sons, my affection for him is the greatest.
हिंदी अनुवाद
यह (राम) बड़े कष्टों से उत्पन्न हुआ है, अतः आप राम को न ले जाएं। मेरे चारों पुत्रों में राम के प्रति मेरा प्रेम (प्रीति) सर्वाधिक है।
English Commentary
The word krichhrena (with difficulty) alludes to the sacrificial rites (Putrakameshti Yajna) and spiritual austerities Dasharatha undertook to conceive. He openly admits to a hierarchy of affection, stating his love for Rama is paramika (supreme) among the four. While a King should treat all equally, Dasharatha confesses his partiality to emphasize the unique agony he feels at this specific request. He is essentially saying, "Ask for anything else, even my other sons, but not this one."

'कृच्छ्रेण' (कठिनाई/कष्ट से) शब्द दशरथ द्वारा किए गए पुत्रकामेष्टि यज्ञ और लंबी तपस्या की ओर संकेत करता है। दशरथ खुले तौर पर स्वीकार करते हैं कि यद्यपि उनके चार पुत्र हैं (राम, लक्ष्मण, भरत, शत्रुघ्न) और वे सभी प्रिय हैं, फिर भी राम के प्रति उनका स्नेह 'परमिका' (सर्वोच्च) है। एक राजा द्वारा ऐसा भेद करना अनुचित लग सकता है, लेकिन यहाँ एक पिता का निश्छल हृदय बोल रहा है। वे विश्वामित्र को यह समझाना चाहते हैं कि राम को मांगना उनसे उनका सब कुछ मांगने जैसा है।
