ज्येष्ठे धर्म प्रधाने च न रामम् नेतुम् अर्हसि ।
किम् वीर्याः राक्षसाः ते च कस्य पुत्राः च के च ते ॥ ॥१-२०-१२॥
Jyeṣṭhe dharma pradhāne ca na rāmam netum arhasi । Kim vīryāḥ rākṣasāḥ te ca kasya putrāḥ ca ke ca te ॥ ॥1-20-12॥
Translation
He is the eldest and chiefly devoted to Dharma; you ought not to take Rama. (Tell me,) what is the power of those Rakshasas? Whose sons are they and who are they?

वह ज्येष्ठ है और धर्म-प्रधान (धर्मरागी) है, इसलिए आप राम को न ले जाएं। (अब राजा शत्रु के बारे में पूछते हैं) वे राक्षस कितने पराक्रमी हैं? वे किसके पुत्र हैं और वे कौन हैं?
English Commentary
Dasharatha lists the final disqualifications: Rama is the Crown Prince (Jyeshtha) and is inherently pious (Dharma pradhana), implying he is too gentle for brutal slaughter. Shifting gears, Dasharatha then demands military intelligence. Before committing to any action, he asks the standard tactical questions: Who is the enemy? What is their lineage (which often dictates their power level)? And what are their capabilities? The King begins to assess the threat level realistically.

राम को न भेजने का अंतिम तर्क—वह 'ज्येष्ठ' (उत्तराधिकारी) है और 'धर्म प्रधान' (सात्विक) है, यानी वह हिंसा और युद्ध के लिए नहीं बना है। इसके बाद, दशरथ का स्वर बदलता है। वे भावुकता से व्यावहारिकता की ओर बढ़ते हैं। वे 'इंटेलिजेंस' (गुप्तचर जानकारी) मांगते हैं। यदि युद्ध अपरिहार्य है, तो शत्रु की पहचान, वंशावली और शक्ति जानना आवश्यक है। यह एक अनुभवी योद्धा-राजा की सोच है जो बिना शत्रु को जाने युद्ध में नहीं कूदना चाहता।
