Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स्थातव्यम् दुष्ट भावानाम् वीर्योत्सिक्ता हि राक्षसाः ।
तस्य तद् वचनम् श्रुत्वा विश्वामित्रो अभ्यभाषत ॥ ॥१-२०-१५॥
Sthātavyam duṣṭa bhāvānām vīryotsiktā hi rākṣasāḥ । Tasya tad vacanam śrutvā viśvāmitro abhyabhāṣata ॥ ॥1-20-15॥
Translation
(Dasharatha continues:) "How is one to stand against those of wicked nature? For the Rakshasas are intoxicated with their own power." Hearing those words of his, Vishvamitra replied.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(दशरथ कहते हैं:) "दुष्ट स्वभाव वाले उन राक्षसों के सामने युद्ध में कोई कैसे टिक सकता है? क्योंकि राक्षस अपने बल के कारण उन्मत्त रहते हैं।" राजा के उन वचनों को सुनकर विश्वामित्र ने उत्तर दिया।
English Commentary
This verse bridges Dasharatha's anxious query with Vishvamitra's revelation. Dasharatha characterizes the enemy as viryotsikta—arrogant or intoxicated by their own valor—implying they are unpredictable and unstoppable. He wonders how anyone can essentially "stand" (sthatavyam) against such chaotic evil. Vishvamitra, realizing the King needs specific details to understand the gravity of the situation, prepares to speak.

यह श्लोक पिछले प्रसंग का समापन और नए का आरंभ है। दशरथ अपनी चिंता व्यक्त कर रहे हैं कि राक्षस केवल बलवान ही नहीं, बल्कि 'वीर्योत्सिक्ता' (शक्ति के नशे में चूर) और 'दुष्ट भावानाम्' (बुरी नियत वाले) भी हैं, जो उन्हें और अधिक खतरनाक बनाता है। वे नियमों से नहीं लड़ते। राजा की इस हताशा को सुनकर विश्वामित्र अब असली खतरे का खुलासा करने जा रहे हैं। वे राजा को शत्रु की वास्तविक पहचान बताने के लिए तैयार होते हैं।
